The overall purpose of this position is to protect and develop the intellectual property portfolio of IEEE, one of the world's leading publisher of journals, transactions, letters, and magazines in electrical engineering, computing, biotechnology, telecommunications, power and energy, and dozens of other technologies. The incumbent in this position is primarily responsible for managing all aspects of the IEEE intellectual property portfolio including registrations, enforcement actions, and development of policies to protect and exploit intellectual property, with a particular focus on copyright and trademark protection. The incumbent has a strong understanding of the publishing process, both current and evolving, in order to advise stakeholder and business leaders in maintaining developing savvy and agile intellectual property protection strategies.
The role reports to the General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer and manages one direct report.
Key Responsibilities
Counsels and educates colleagues and business clients of trademark, copyright, intellectual property, and social media
Enforces IEEE copyright, domain name, Internet and trademark, including anti-counterfeiting
Advises, counsels, and guides business clients on various IP related matters, both domestically and internationally
Manages copyright, trademark and domain name takedown requests, cease and desist orders, litigation and dispute resolution relating to IP matters
Coordinates anti-counterfeiting activities and advising on intellectual property aspects of social media
Manages the portion of the Legal Department budget for the designated copyright, trademark and domain name portfolios
Prepares and negotiates relevant contracts, reports and legal analyses
Contributes to the development of copyright, trademark, domain name, blog, and social media policies and procedures and ensures implementation of the same
Acts as copyright, trademark and domain name reference expert for the portfolios and counsel on all such matters as they affect the business
Acts as valued strategic partner to the business to ensure all product and branding goals with respect to intellectual property matters are met
Advises and contributes to the contract and license review process within the Legal and Compliance Department
Contributes to branding and web presence portfolio development and policy

Req Work Experience7-10 years Experience in both private practice and the publishing industry, to manage a global copyright, trademark and domain name portfolio Req 4-7 years Experience with IP as primary practice area and dealing with privacy-related issues Req Licenses and Certifications Member in good standing of the Bar in New York Req Skills and Requirements Excellent communication skills and professionalism Ability to work strategically with all IEEE organization units and local counsel around the world Highly developed presentation, interpersonal and negotiation skills are critical. Ability to work professionally and collegially in team settings, and must possess strong expertise in order to achieve protection of the IEEE copyrights and trademark portfolio, and IEEE privacy policies and procedures Proficiency in performing legal analyses on various matters, both domestically and internationally.
