ABB is seeking as Senior Director, Intellectual Property & CoE (Center of Expertise) Lead, CRC (Corporate Research Center) for its Raleigh, North Carolina location. You will be leading, developing and managing intellectual property portfolio strategy & development, GFIP functional excellence initiatives including analytical forecasting and strategic model integration within central services business model, and leading/supporting GFIP activities for CRC/digital technology pursuits and IP strategies including annual CRC performance related to IP as CoE Leader; you will also be responsible for driving continued transformation and closely partner with technology, legal and finance; bring technology depth and breadth, with business solutions focus and results.
ABB is a global leader in power and automation technologies and the Country Staff Legal & Integrity department supports employees developing everything from safer mines and transformers to highly-skilled robots.

Typical duties/responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Lead, develop and drive intellectual property portfolio development and strategy for CRCs as CoE Lead, business units and for external licensing opportunities, as directed, while providing enabling direction, counsel and solutions having technical, legal and business implications for strategic IP (Intellectual Property) investment, client roadmap planning and execution, and IP activities/investment alignment across the Group.
* Assess, improve and execute data-centric analytical models and methodologies while enhancing centralized processes, which enhance and clarify the innovation to income life-cycle, simplify work streams and processing times, align business and innovation interests, and demonstrate innovation investment information; provide education supporting all efforts to diverse audiences to effect positive and transformational adoption.
* Direct and lead all associated integration of IP processes into cross-functional teams of engineers, product managers, business leaders and legal services; and identify and educate on the awareness of differentiating technologies ahead of market entry, including competitive IP assessment analysis, 3rd party technology opportunities and partner/supplier assessments as required.
* Create and assimilate all appropriate strategies and IP playbooks for reducing risk, leveraging portfolio assets, and enhancing the value of technologies and IP portfolios of ABB, tactically and strategically.
* Direct and lead often highly-visible cross-functional project and innovation teams where members may be geographically dispersed in leading edge technologies including digital, where schedules are compressed.
* Develop, lead and direct strategy, guidance and provide creative approaches to reduce risk, create value and build strong portfolios with innovation leaders and technologists including engaging in business, technology and legal strategies which may also require seeking new ways of leveraging technology, charting next generation technologies, and identifying opportunities to improve growth and competitive advantage for the Company. Support centers for research (CRC) as directed.
* Develop and lead teams to adopt self-developed appropriate algorithms and analytics delivering insights into costs, prosecutions, investments and opportunities for savings, to support a large globally funded IP program.
* Be a primary technical and IP leader partnering with the CRC, Tech Leadership and BU (Business Unit) engineering organizations, the corporate strategy/business development function and the IP Legal organization and in creating a coordinated network of world-class technology and IP capabilities for competitive advantage and premier performance. Lead the Centers of Excellence (CoE) for CRCs ensuring appropriate technologies are protected, funded for protection and performance metrics are delivered consistently annually.
* Lead, develop and manage assigned tasks including areas of patent creation, portfolio management, education and training, IP/contracts and licensing/monetization activities; drive efforts to effect timely delivery of work, centralized database management support and lead key M & A (Mergers & Acquisitions)/audit/open source/digital activities as assigned, including performing local IP work coordinated and aligned with our technology pursuits and IP strategies involving our Regional and Global IP Operations.
* Provide management and leadership to assigned teams and resources, lead the analytical initiatives in regions, globally and as assigned, be responsible for engagement and participation with associated CoE, business units as assigned, and proactively overcoming challenges and/or conflicts resulting from process, policy and/or organizational changes.
* Coordinate ABBs defined targets into Global activity and align with IP Operations and CoE teams, including the Region IP and/or Division IP Counsel(s)/resources and other centers of expertise as directed; provide support to litigation, defensive strategies, transactions, research & development, and other IP regional activities.
* Mentor, manage, communicate and continually improve the teams day-to-day work, performance; locally ensure best IP practices supporting ABBs global IP strategy, including the qualitative, quantitative, and timely contribution and relentless execution of related IP activities by self and the local team members to the GF-IP structure in coordination with special assignments of team members to centers of expertise; actively drive integration of local organization into global GF-IP; simplify and align processes with global GF-IP; drive paper filing to e-filing and ensure full and comprehensive accessibility by the global GF-IP organization; encourage and walk the talk on cross-border IP collaboration, exchange and support amongst the local units.
* Support areas of IP CoE services including IP litigation, licensing, conflicts, software issues, patent creation, competitive assessment, innovation, and portfolio support, IP clearance and risk assessment opinions, antitrust compliance for technology transfers; M & A, IP data management; IP education and awareness; product trademark, copyright, and trade secret protection and management, standards and policies, and other IP initiatives often involving complex situations and technologies (collectively IP Operations).
* Lead the team in developing, providing and instilling an integrated IP culture through educational sessions, invention creation initiatives and attend to all details in the IP transactions, confidentiality matters, licensing, etc., and activities in the region
* Timely and completely provide forecasts and budgets, and risk/success issues to the benefit of the global performance of ABB.
* Achieve and deliver, with relentless execution, self and teams targets within budgets and timing as agreed to with leadership team; provide dedicated support, contribute and/or lead assigned projects, programs and assessments as assigned.
* Support administrative aspects including billing, invoicing, payment and remuneration needs as assigned; establish and run early warning system for IP cost management to Center of Expertise leads. Lead Anaqua and data management in-house efforts as assigned.
* Be an active lean/six sigma leader and mentor across the organization;
* Effectively establish and manage IP budgets, expenditures, and internal and external resource activities.
* Facilitate portfolio audits, annual reviews and valuations, incentive programs, optimized maintenance processes, etc.
* Support the IP Senior Leadership Team (IPSLT) to establish a world-class operating environment, acting as an owner, while mentoring and leading others in IP initiatives, activities and education with respect and courtesy.
* Be GFIP point of contact key technology and research understanding and leadership.

Basic Qualifications:
* Masters Degree in Engineering or technical sciences and a minimum of 15 years of diverse technology experiences with a minimum of 10 years involving complex technical developments in a competitive IP environment, at least 3 years program leadership, and at least 3 years direct involvement in IP clearance, freedom-to-operate, competitive claim assessment, design-around activities, data analytics, and technical project leadership with business impact; prior entrepreneurial or start-up experience also desirable.
* Masters Degree in Business and a minimum of 15 years of diverse technology experiences with a minimum of 10 years involving complex technical developments in a competitive IP environment, at least 3 years program leadership, and at least 3 years direct involvement in IP clearance, freedom-to-operate, competitive claim assessment, design-around activities, data analytics, and technical project leadership with business impact; prior entrepreneurial or start-up experience also desirable.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Prior experience involving strategic aspects of IP with technology and business, preferably in a Fortune 200, six sigma/lean environment.
* Registered attorney or agent with active and good standing admission to US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) and have demonstrable related experience with the USPTO.
* Prior IP experience particularly in strategy-oriented aspects involving technology roadmaps, technology visioning, competitive IP assessment, reverse engineering, and strategic innovation projects and programs encompassing data analytics and big-data analysis.
* Proven successes in communicating complex issues in an understandable manner with executives, business and technical leaders, and legal service providers, including providing clear solutions, alternatives and risk positions associated with strategy, and matters involving global and geographically-dispersed situations.
* Excellent analytical skills and a diversity of technical expertise, including the ability to relate disparate technologies, identify opportunities for technology convergence, and determine optimal technology alignment in view of IP risks, competitive challenges, and technology roadmaps.
* Experience working with complex budgets, investment planning and inventors in geographically-dispersed regions, creating and motivating dynamic project teams across multiple business sectors, and have participated in innovation and patent generating initiatives.
* PhD is desirable and highly preferred.
* Familiarity with IP software systems and approaches for creating e-based IP process benefits desired; in depth experience with one or more of CIPHER, Patentsight, PatSnap, ANAQUA, Derwent, etc. highly desired.
* Six Sigma DFSS/DMAIC Green Belt highly desired.
* Inventive experience as a patent holder highly desired.
* Outgoing, positive and motivating personality, creative and strong organizational and political resolution skills; relentless in execution and drive to achieve transformational initiatives.
* Flexible, self-driven and possess a positive outlook with an innovative and creative spirit, and successfully engaged in enabling IP as a business lever philosophy.
* Strong working knowledge of IP practice expertise and regulations as well as foreign filing strategy and litigation awareness.
* Able to identify, lead, and support appropriate tasks, strategies and implementations in leveraging our IP Teams efforts for competitive IP business advantage.
* Able to set priorities and manage a wide-ranging work load under time pressure; flexibility required.
* A strong team leader, project manager, with delivery mindset and strong ability to work with diverse group of team members; ability to be independent in activities and actions while driving teams and on own to achieve right outcomes with highest integrity; Know IP, understand economics, think strategically, talk business, act with integrity.
