JOB SUMMARY:
The PDS will support all aspects of the management of two practice groups: Intellectual Property Transactions and Technology, Media and Telecommunications. This includes providing support on marketing, business development, knowledge management, lateral attorney hiring and integration and other business and logistical support critical to its day-to-day operations and long-term growth. The PDS will contribute to the overall success of the practice groups by helping to implement practice group strategy and the overall firm strategy. The PDS will also coordinate attorneys, professional staff and various business line groups on a variety of cross-office, cross-practice or firm strategic initiatives and will act as a liaison to other firm departments relating to the practice groups’ support needs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1.Work with the PDM, Practice Group Leaders (“PGLs”), attorneys and other internal firm resources to develop and implement practice group strategic plans and individual partner business plans. This includes business development and marketing initiatives within the practice groups and across practice groups and industry teams.
2.Create and manage processes, tools and resources to support the effective collection of practice group data, including client lists, experience lists, intranet site(s) and efficient day-to-day administration of the practice group.
3.Assist with the analysis of practice group financial reports, metrics and key performance indicators.
4.Facilitate and coordinate marketing and business development initiatives, including pitches, responses to RFPs, client presentations and webinars, and organization and planning of client events, industry conferences and sponsorships.
5.Work closely with the firm’s Events, Creative and PR teams to help identify, assess and coordinate industry visibility and externally focused activities, including: sponsorships, speaking engagements and conference attendance; charitable donations; and webinars and client events.
6.Assist the PDM, PGLs and partners in conducting research and gathering and analyzing practice group, industry, competitive and client-specific data to inform and support business development and marketing initiatives.
7.Work closely with the Marketing Department to facilitate the Group’s marketing efforts, including the preparation of marketing collateral (e.g., brochures, bios, ads, website and practice overviews).
8.Work with the PDM and PGLs to plan and execute practice group and partner meetings, as well as internal practice group social and team-building events.
9.Coordinate and prepare legal ranking submissions and league tables, including working with the PDM and PGLs to determine the rankings strategy for each submission, drafting and finalizing submissions and tracking submission information from year to year (as applicable).
10.Assist the PDM and PGLs with the onboarding and integration of lateral partners and counsel into the practice groups, including helping to draft sponsor memoranda, prepare and execute integration plans and track progress of same.
11.Assist the PDM in supervising and developing the team’s Practice Development Assistants.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
1.Working knowledge of law firm and practice operations.
2.Excellent project management and organizational skills with proven attention to detail.
3.Ability to identify and solve problems, work independently, and take initiative.
4.Ability to compile, review, and determine logical conclusions or recommendations based on data and information which is varied in content and format.
5.Excellent oral communication and business writing skills.
6.Demonstrated ability to effectively use technology, database, presentation, and spreadsheet software applications.
7.Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively with people at all levels
8.Ability to establish credibility with Ropes & Gray partners and to display the right mix of confidence, tact and persistence in working with the firm’s lawyers.
9.Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality of the Firm’s internal and personnel affairs.
10.Ability to work with professional staff in a multi-office environment.
11.Occasional travel to attend Group-sponsored client events and/or seminars.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
An undergraduate degree, plus a minimum of three years of relevant experience in a large law firm or corporate environment.
Understanding of the intellectual property industry a plus.
A background in business or equivalent experience is desirable.
