ABOUT THIS ROLE:
In this role, the Vice President serves as chief legal advisor for Intellectual Property (IP) activities and functions, counsels management on the legal implications of all corporate and divisional activities and issues; develops and implements legal strategies, manages IP legal services as required . Obtains the services of outside counsel as required to compliment available internal legal resources. Serves as member of Senior Staff working with General Counsel in various areas including department culture, development of talent and budget initiatives.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
*Providing global, strategic counsel to the business regarding the competitive IP landscape for the company's current product portfolio and future technology plans *Ensuring close cross-collaboration with internal commercial teams, clinical, corporate research and development and business development teams in implementing company's pipeline growth and long-term commercialization strategy such that IP considerations are taken into account *Supporting Chief Litigation Officer in management of strategic IP litigation, directing outside counsel and participating in developing comprehensive legal strategies. *Creating and implementing fiscally-responsible, global IP strategy with consideration of resources, including developing, maintaining and optimizing a broad global IP portfolio in a cost-effective manner *Managing team of highly skilled IP professionals *Fostering an organizational structure and design for business continuity. *Recruiting, coaching and developing organizational talent. *Fostering a diverse workplace that enables all participants to contribute to their full potential in pursuit of organizational objectives *Creating an entrepreneurial environment *Promoting the organization's vision and values at the forefront of decision making and action *Demonstrating effective change leadership. *Building strategic partnerships with internal and external executive level management, as well as outside counsel to further organizational objectives. *Monitoring and ensuring compliance with company policies and procedures *Making and executing operational decisions with a strategic perspective *Proactively looking for opportunities to become more efficient in a resource-constrained environment *Reviewing, advising on, investigating and resolving significant legal matters *Establishing and supporting a work environment of continuous improvement that supports BSC's Quality Policy, Quality System and the appropriate regulations for the area they support. What we're looking for:
*J.D. and active bar license required, along with a Bachelor's degree and/or advanced degree in science or engineering *15+ years experience (device, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, preferred), including experience in a managerial capacity *Demonstrated business acumen, strong analytical skills, and the ability to grasp important business issues and legal issues facing the Company *Approaches IP with a strategic mindset by anticipating future business, competitive and legal risks and looking for creative solutions and opportunities *Demonstrated understanding of international legal IP landscape/laws *A proven leader, who has hired, trained, motivated, facilitated and led a team *Ability to work across functions - excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal. *Capable of quickly establishing credibility.
*Experience with IP litigation/IPR process *Experience managing a substantial IP budget *Strategic thinker, analytical, accountable, solution-oriented, and results driven *Demonstrated ability to establish credibility internally and externally *Demonstrated success in managing teams, mentoring and developing team members *High sense of urgency and commitment to execution *Strong executive presence, and excellent communication and writing skills
