Wells Fargo has an opportunity for a senior patent attorney to work on our growing patent and technology team in the legal department. The patent attorney will counsel clients and coordinate business unit patent activities, including advising clients in the development and implementation of intellectual property protection and risk management strategies.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Engaging business partners to identify and examine potential intellectual property opportunities and encouraging the creation and protection of intellectual property;
Developing, coordinating and reviewing patent research and analysis projects, including prior art searches, patentability analyses, portfolio analyses, infringement/non-infringement analyses, validity/invalidity analyses and freedom to operate analyses;
Managing the drafting, filing, prosecuting and maintaining a patent portfolio;
Reviewing and advising on agreements involving technology and intellectual property matters;
Educating company employees on IP and the patent process
Setting and implementing patent policies; and
Directing and managing work with outside counsel related to intellectual property matters.

Required Qualifications
10+ years of experience as a practicing attorney
Active State Bar membership
Desired Qualifications
Extensive knowledge and understanding of research, counsel, and guidance on complex legal questions or inquiries
Strong attention to detail and accuracy skills
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Effective organizational, multi tasking, and prioritizing skills
Ability to analyze legal issues in substantive law in area of practice and provide effective advice to clients on complex legal matters
Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities and deadlines
Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities
Strong research and documentation skills
Other Desired Qualifications
10+ years of experience including patent preparation and prosecution, freedom to operate, portfolio management, and patent licensing
Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, advanced degree preferred, preferably in engineering or a computer-related discipline
Registered to practice before the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO)
Ability to be responsible for intellectual property related activities for a line of business, including training the business on patent filing and strategy, idea harvesting, management of patent application preparation and prosecution, product clearance opinions and other third party patent issues, and assisting in patent acquisitions and licensing
Ability to provide intellectual property due diligence and transactional support
Ability to counsel other lawyers on intellectual property issues that affect Wells Fargo
Have personally prepared and prosecuted at least 50 patent applications
Significant experience in intellectual property risk management
At least three years of experience in a corporate legal department
Experience within the financial services industry
Ability to work well in teams
