Position Summary

Oversees and directs the intellectual property protection function within STERIS, including the preparation, filing and litigation of patents, trademarks, copyrights, licenses, agreements and other forms of intellectual property protections. Advises and informs senior management and other stakeholders of intellectual property protection matters. Ensures that legal issues and recommendations are communicated to stakeholders and outside counsel.  Interacts frequently with internal and external associates concerning projects, operational decisions, scheduling requirements, and/or contractual clarifications.


\tProvides legal advice and service on patents, copyrights, trademarks and trade names including patentability of inventions, discovery, and infringement of patents. Provides advice to protect company's interest in scientific/technical publications and with collaborators, communities and suppliers.
\tPrepares, files, and prosecutes patent applications to obtain broadest possible protection for company's inventions. Ensures all commercially important inventions and trademarks, including words, names, symbols and logos, are protected by valid patents and do not infringe valid third party patents. May handle appeal and interference proceedings. Renders opinions regarding infringement and validity of patents. May negotiate and draft patent licenses and other agreements. Conducts and evaluates state-of-the-art searches and infringement searches.
\tMay participate in litigation. Must pass and retain the patent bar and be admitted for registration to practice. Has understanding of company's products and technology. Leverages outside counsel as need to execute work and meet operational objectives efficiently.
\tEstablishes operating policies and procedures that affect departments and subordinate sections and work units. Interprets company-wide policies and procedures. Involved in developing, modifying and executing company policies that affect immediate operations and may also have company-wide effect.
\tDevelops budgets, schedules, and performance standards for function.
\tManages individual contributor Intellectual Property specialist.  Selects, develops, and evaluates personnel and external legal firms to ensure the efficient operation of the function.
\tRegularly interacts with senior management or executive levels on IP matters.
\tEstablishes operational objectives and work plans, and delegates assignments to subordinates.
\tWorks on issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of organizational objectives.

Education Degree
Doctorate in Law

Required Experience

\tMinimum of 10 years experience practicing law with minimum of 6 year experience in patent law.
\tJD required.
\tMember in good standing of any US State Bar.
\tRequires the ability to change the thinking of, or gain acceptance from, others in sensitive situations, without damage to the relationship.
\tDetail-oriented and possess strong organizational and prioritization skills.
\tEffectively manage multiple tasks and priorities, and quickly adjust to shifting priorities and demanding deadlines when necessary. 
\tExceptional writing and communication skills.
\tAbility to convey legal advice clearly and effectively.
\tExcellent legal and practical judgment with strong problem solving skills.
\tMust be highly proficient in MS Office Suite, including MS Word and PowerPoint.
\tAbility to manage company resources, both people and budget, in an effective and efficient manner.
