Job Summary The College of Pharmacy is recruiting a Research Faculty Member in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry to serve as a Co-Director in the Vahlteich Medicinal Chemistry Core (VMCC). The VMCC () at the University of Michigan has several objectives: 1) To establish productive grant-funded collaborations with biomedical researchers at UM and elsewhere that facilitate novel therapeutic target validation in vivo with small molecule probes; 2) to provide fee-for-service synthesis of small molecule tools for biomedical investigations; 3) to train graduate students in the strategy and techniques of drug discovery and early development; 4) to conduct non-didactic teaching and mentoring of postdoctorial fellows, junior research colleagues, or students; and 5) to consult on all matters pertaining to early drug discovery including: lead selection and optimization, molecular modeling, patentability assessment,and pharmacokinetic optimization. Responsibilities* The successful candidate will work with the VMCC director to: 1) manage ongoing funded drug discovery collaborations; 2) establish new collaborations through meetings with prospective collaborators, scholarly research and collaborative grant preparation; 3) prepare quotes for potential recharge clients; 4) draft patent applications and publications as appropriate; 5) track supply spending and manage individual project budgets; 6) identify and manage CRO chemistry support if needed; 7) mentor students, trainees, and junior colleagues. The position reports to the chair of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry. Required Qualifications* PhD degree in organic chemistry with emphasis on organic synthesis > \u00a02 years postdoctoral training in organic synthesis > \u00a015 years experience in pharmaceutical industry drug discovery as a synthetic medicinal chemist > \u00a05 years experience leading interdisciplinary project teams in drug discovery > \u00a02 years experience managing PhD level medicinal chemists Demonstrated success at small molecule drug discovery, as evidenced by delivery of clinical candidates, inventorship on issued patents, and major authorship in high impact peer- reviewed journals Experience in managing CRO personnel Didactic teaching experience, preferably at the graduate level Desired Qualifications* Familiar with major computational chemistry software, including MOE, Gold and AutoDock Experience with structure-based drug design
