CoMotion is recruiting for a full time Digital Content and Database Innovation Manager to facilitate innovation transfer related to content, software, databases, web services, and other digital media developed at the University. The ideal candidate will have a track record of supporting product development efforts in the digital content space, particularly for very early staged projects, and a passion for helping researchers extend the impact of their digital content based innovations.This role provides expert advice, connects teams to resources, and supports the research team with guidance in their customer discovery activities. It also makes intellectual property decisions, and drafts and negotiates licenses. The portfolio this position manages is copyright focused with an occasional trademark, patent, or know-how component. This portfolio focuses on digital content tools being licensed in such a way that ongoing collaboration, customization and feedback is included in the terms of the license agreement. Often these projects are not one-time licensing opportunities, but rather ongoing projects in which feedback and revenue generated from licensing is in-part used to support improvements and extensions of the original work product and contribute to the research, teaching, and clinical activities at ***** addition to licensing is to existing companies/distributors, there is also direct to end-user licensing agreements, and occasionally a license to a UW spin-out. This is a unique opportunity to work in a collaborative way with UW project leads on programs closely aligned with the academic mission and of broad societal benefit.Critical skills include expertise in customer discovery efforts and product positioning, excellent interpersonal skills, an understanding of copyright-based intellectual property rights, extensive problem solving skills and an ability to work collaboratively across multiple UW units to find novel solutions that satisfy multiple stakeholders and comply with university policies.Duties and responsibilities will include advising University personnel on content development and management, advising University personnel on intellectual property and distribution, perfecting rights (intellectual property and related rights), developing market strategies, negotiating and drafting licenses, promoting University content and software transfer capabilities, and contributing to the CoMotion Innovation Development groups infrastructure development, including tasks such as providing input on group processes.The position will participate in CoMotions outreach activities, including training students and visitors, giving talks to faculty and student-researcher groups, will work with external parties to assist in promoting understanding of the University process.This role provides expert advice, connects teams to resources, and supports the research team with guidance in their customer discovery activities. Often these projects are not one-time licensing opportunities, but rather ongoing projects in which feedback and revenue generated from licensing is in-part used to support improvements and extensions of the original work product and contribute to the research, teaching, and clinical activities at UW.These projects involve working closely with research teams over multiple years, and often there are components of the project such as consulting or integration into ongoing research, or may involved software as a service provided by the research team.RESPONSIBILITIES:Project Development and Marketing for UW innovations: Using business acumen, negotiation and presentation skills to marketing and license UW innovationsIdentifying potential licenseesPreparing informational materials regarding UW innovationsResponsible and accountable for opportunity generation and managing a successful technology portfolioIdentifying and supporting marketing of the project through presentations at technology showacses and local eventsNegotiating and Drafting licenses for UW intellectual property:Initiating contact with licensees, drafting and negotiating license agreementsReviewing and revising business pitches to attract investment in projectsEncouraging and evaluating new projects and innovation disclosuresAssessing new innovations generated by University faculty and researchers for their potential IP and marketabilityRecommending whether or not to commercialize innovationsAs appropriate, work with CoMotion IP team members to coordinate the protection of UWs proprietary rights in innovations via patent, copyright or trademarkDeveloping plans for effective transfer of technology to industry or a new business ventureWorking proactively with entrepreneurs, investors, and investigators to catalyze promising commercialization projects:Identifying commercialization gap funding sources and facilitating applications for those awardsConnecting with industry experts, CoMotion mentors, CoMotion Advisors, community angel investors, and local technology associationsProviding service to university and broader community:Educating UW community and private sector about commercialization and intellectual propertyConducting presentations to schools and departments regarding commercialization, communicate UW policies on patents, inventions, and copyrightsParticipating in local and regional business groupsServing as faculty resource for questions on UW policies related to conflict of interest, outside consulting, and other relevant issuesWorking with Deans, Chairs, Directors, Faculty, Staff and Students to determine intellectual property protection and commercialization needs and implement strategies to meet those needsREQUIREMENTS:Masters Degree in digital content related field, with 2 years of experience in product development and customer discovery or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Excellent organizational, research and information management skills. Self-starting, highly motivated, able to work independently as well as coordinate activities with a managing team. Appreciation for the academic research process, including federal and industry sponsored research agreement terms and publication practices. Some knowledge of intellectual property laws, publicity and privacy laws, and laws and regulations related to contracts, content and data, along with the willingness to learn more as necessary to become proficient. Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, licensing including development of non-exclusive distribution models, with the overall goal of helping university innovation developers create sustainable revenue to further research at UW.Key Competencies:Effective communications: Strong ability to engender confidence in faculty, staff, students and fellow colleagues.
